The University of Chester Rotaract Club was chartered in November 2013 sponsored by the Rotary Club of Saughall. Members joined after a successful recruitment campaign at the Freshers Fayre.
The inaugural President 2014/15 was Jennifer Burglingham – a student from Ohio. Jenny made an amazing speech at the Charter Night in front of 50 visitors from District 1180. District Governor Philip Horwood presented her with a chain of office – sponsored by Rotarians from Rotary Club of Saughall. Champagne and a buffet (supplied by Saughall Rotarians) was enjoyed by all.
Before the champagne had been finished several members of the newly formed Rotaract Club disappeared to participate in a ‘sleep out’ in support of the Chester Homeless (CATH).
On Valentines Day, one of the Saughall Rotarians supplied red roses to the students and they spent their meeting night gift wrapping them and they were sold on campus the following day.
The Rotaractors have joined in several events with Saughall Rotary – in particular a presentation on Shelter Box. The have helped at a couple of the beer festivals – either serving drinks or arranging a raffle. A couple of Rotaractors enjoyed attending the Saughall Rotary Charter Night.
The second Rotaract President was Emily Scott 2015/16. Emily was invited to speak at the District Conference in Southport and made a splendid performance in front of 250 Rotarians – speaking about how the club was formed and what charities they had supported and their future plans. District Governor Les Wilson was very supportive to the Club and Emily was invited to speak at the RIBI Conference in Belfast. This was a huge honour and Emily travelled with her Mum, Wendy to Belfast. Beryl and Tony took them out for a celebratory meal after Emily’s performance. There was, also, a little time for some Irish sightseeing. Again, Emily was well prepared and spoke with great authority about the Rotaract Club at the University.
Emily attended the Chester Rotary Club Raft Race with her mum and enjoyed a picnic with Rotarians (until the rain came down).
The Chester Rotary Club were very kind in donating £1000 to the Rotaract Club. In the past they had sponsored a Rotaract Club and these funds had been held in a trust account. Chester Rotary asked Saughall Rotary to ensure that the Retractors spent the money wisely.
During 2014/15 and 2015/16 the Rotaract members were mentored by Saughall Rotarians Julie Davey and Beryl Cotton.
Club President 2016/17 is Mahjooba Rahjo. Rotarians Julie Davey and Colin Sullivan recently visited.
As the Club has been in existence for three years now. it is essential that there is an annual representation at Freshers Week so that membership is continually updated.
We have been very fortunate to have three good leaders.
